Description of the Project

A series of intensive technical workshops with 60 women and children from rural areas in Alexandria. The workshops are aiming at empowering participants with skills, encouraging them to act sustainable and spreading awareness about environmental issues related to their communities.

The results of the workshops will be displayed in an exhibition where products will be sold empower the creative sector towards smart and sustainable growth.

This project is in context of AGORA’s program “Art for Economic Development”, and funded by the Prince Claus Fund.

Why Rural or Slum Communities

Latest statistics show that around 40% of Egypt’s 85 million people live on or below 2$ per-day poverty line set by the World bank. This comes as no surprise. Movies, talk shows, the work of civil society organizations have all depicted this image one way or another during the former regime, but minimal change has occurred. Efforts to develop Egypt’s slums has been going on for several years now, however, tangible change has not been felt. Are all these civil society organizations going in the wrong direction? Are they targeting the wrong people? Is there something wrong with their tactics to alleviate poverty?

A new approach needs to be taken into consideration to ensure the efforts of improving the well-being of many Egyptians do not go to waste. This approach lies in the use of Arts and Culture  in development.

1-    Turning Waste into Jewelry, by Rana Ghazy and Passante Abdelhafiz 

The first workshop is taking place in Al-Harameen region from 7 to 26 May with 20 women and girls from the region. The workshop is taking place in the premises of AYB Association. AYB Association also helps AGORA identify women with special conditions using their database of the region. Participants of the workshop are taught how to use cans, can tops and old wooden colored pencils how to create jewelry .

AL-HARAMEEN AREA

One of 10 slum regions in Alexandria and a total of 30 regions in Egypt. Alharameen is locates in Almontazah; a local government district of Alexandria Governorate on the north-eastern end of the city.  Despite the fact the area has a moderate number of inhabitants but illiteracy and unemployment rates are relatively high.

 

2-    Turning Waste into Home Accessories, by Boustan Magdy and Nada Abdelhafiz

The second workshop will entail using plastic bags and plastic bottles to create home accessories. Trainers are Boustan Magdy and Nada Abdelhafiz. The workshop will take place in the premises of BAMBI Association for women and children care during the period from 12 to 30 June 2013.

 GHOBRIAL REGION

One of slum / disadvantaged regions in Alexandria, located in the heart of Alexandria. The region has high population density and very high crime rate.

سلسلة من ورش العمل الفنية المكثفة مع 60 من النساء والأطفال من المناطق العشوائية أو المهمشة في الإسكندرية. تهدف ورش العمل إلى تمكين المشاركين من المهارات التقنية وتشجيعهم على التصرف بشكل تنموي مستديم، كما تساعد على نشر الوعي حول القضايا البيئية المتصلة مجتمعاتهم.

سيتم عرض نتائج ورش العمل في معرض حيث سيتم بيعها لتمكين القطاع الإبداعي نحو النمو الذكي والمستدام.

هذا المشروع يتم تنظيمه في سياق برنامج أجـــورا "الفن من أجل التنمية الاقتصادية"، وبتمويل من صندوق الأمير كلاوس.

لماذا المجتمعات المهمشة أو الأحياء الفقيرة

تدل أحدث الإحصاءات أن حوالي 40٪ من الـ 85 مليون شخص في مصر يعيشون على أقل من 2 $ يوميا وهو خط الفقر الذي حدده البنك الدولي. هذا لم يكن مفاجئا. الأفلام، والبرامج الحوارية، وعمل منظمات المجتمع المدني قد صور جميع هذه الصور بطريقة أو بأخرى في زمن النظام السابق، ولكن حدث الحد الأدنى من التغيير.

الجهود المبذولة لتطوير تلك المناطق في مصر مستمرة منذ عدة سنوات الآن، ومع ذلك، لم نشعر بتغيير ملموس. فهل تسير جميع منظمات المجتمع المدني في الاتجاه الخاطئ؟ أم يستهدفون الأشخاص الخطأ؟ هل هناك شيء خاطئ في التكتيكات المتبعة لتخفيف حدة الفقر؟

نحتاج أن نتخذ بعين الاعتبار نهج جديد لضمان أن الجهود المبذولة لتحسين وضع المصريين لن تذهب بلا فائدة. هذا النهج يقع في استخدام الفنون والثقافة في التنمية.

1-    تحويل النفايات إلى حُلي

الورشة الأولى يتم تنظيمها بمنطقة الحرمين في الفترة من 7 إلى 26 مايو 2013 مع عدد 20 سيدة وفتاه من المنطقة.

الورشة يتم تنظيمها في مقر مؤسسة علشانك يا بلدي وبمساعدة تلك المؤسسة من خلال قاعدة بياناتها لتحديد الحالات الخاصة من السيدات والفتيات.

يتم تعليم المُشاركات في الورشة كيفية استخدام علب المشروبات الغازية، وفتاحاتها و بواقي أقلام الخشب الملونة كيفية عمل الحُلي.

منطقة الحرمين

واحدة من 10 مناطق عشوائية في الإسكندرية وواحدة من 30 منطقة عشوائية في مصر.

تقع الحرمين في حي المنتزة، على الطرف الشمالي الشرقي من مدينة الإسكندرية.

على الرغم من أن المنطقة بها عدد معتدل من السكان لكن معدل الأمية والبطالة مرتفعة نسبيا.

2-    تحويل النفايات إلى أكسسوارات منزلية

لبستان مجدي وندى عبد الحفيظ

ورشة العمل الثانية تنطوي على استعمال الأكياس البلاستيكية والزجاجات البلاستيك لتصنيع إكسسوارات منزلية. المدربين هم بستان مجدى وندى عبد الحفيظ. ورشة العمل سوف تتم في مقر جمعية بامبي لرعاية الأمومة والطفولة خلال الفترة من 12-30 يونيو 2013.

منطقة غبريال

واحدة من المناطق الفقيرة / المهمشة في الإسكندرية، وتقع في قلب الإسكندرية. المنطقة لديها كثافة سكانية عالية ومعدل جريمة وبلطجة عالي.

 

START WITH YOURSELF Festival 5 | مهرجان إبدأ بنفسك الخامس

يقوم مركز أجـــورا للفنون والثقافة بتنظيم مهرجانه الخامس "ابدأ بنفسك" يوم 26 إبريل 2011 بملعب كلية الآداب بجامعة الإسكندرية، تحت عنوان المساحة الخضراء وذلك في إطار موسمها الفني "الفن البئي".

ابدأ بنفسك هو مهرجان للفنون المتعددة يتم تنظيمه مرتين في العام في مساحة عامة مختلفة. سوف تكون هذه هي دورته الخامسة. الهدف العام من المهرجان هو تعزيز حق التعبير عن الذات من خلال ممارسة الفنون في الأماكن العامة واستخدامها كأداة لتحقيق التغيير الاجتماعي. 

الأهداف المحددة للمهرجان هي استخدام وتحويل الفضاء العام من خلال ممارسة الفنون، تحويل السلوك الاجتماعي من خلال تسليط الضوء على سلوكيات وصفات معينة تحتاج إلى تغيير، الحد من العنف من خلال ممارسة الفنون، تسليط الضوء على أهمية ممارسة الفنون والذي سوف يزيد من عدد الممارسين للفنون في المجتمع. 

برنامج المهرجان يتضمن عروض لفرق موسيقية وهم فريق مسار إجباري الحاصل على جائزة اليونسكو لعام 2011، فريق شوارعنا، فريق كراكيب، فريق قرار إزالة ومشروع المريخ. 

سوف يقوم المهرجان بتنظيم معرض للحرف اليدوية الفنية لأكثر من 40 عارض من مختلف التخصصات مثل النحاس والأسلاك، والجلود، واللوحات والنحت والنسيج، والكروشيه، والزجاج الخ، ذلك بالإضافة إلى معرض للصور الفوتوغرافية عن الأحداث الفنية السابقة.

 

كما يتضمن برنامج المهرجان ورش عمل "استكشف الفنون" وهي إعادة التدوير، لوحة جدارية المسرح (سيتم رسم جدارية في ورشة عمل قبل برنامج الموسيقي وسيتم عرضها كخلفية للمسرح)، رسم لوحات مع إعادة تدوير المواد.

يستضيف البرنامج أيضًا برنامج ورش عمل GO Green هو عبارة عن سلسلة من الأنشطة تنقسم إلى عدة محطات، كل محطة تأخذ تقريبا من 20 إلى 30 دقيقة. وفقا لذلك يتم تقسيم الطلاب إلى مجموعات فرعية تدور حول جميع المحطات، كل مجموعة تتكون من 8 إلى 10 طلاب.
من خلال حضور هذه الورشة ستكون قد تعرف الطالب على المفاهيم العلمية والتعليمية بطريقة جديدة ومستدامة ومرحة. هذا النهج هو جوهر ما يسمى "تعليم من أجل التنمية المستدامة (ESD)".

AGORA Arts and Culture is organizing its fifth festival “Start with Yourself” on 26 April in the Playground of the Faculty of Arts, Alexandria University, under the title the GREEN AGORA, in contexts of its artistic season “Environmental Arts”.

Start with Yourself is a multi-arts festival taking place twice a year in a new public location. This edition will be its fifth edition.  The overall objective of the festival is to promote the right of self-expression through arts practice in public spaces and its use as a tool to achieve social change.  Specific objectives of the festival are to use and transform the public space through arts practice, transform the social behavior through highlighting specific norms and behavior traits that need social transformation, reduce violence through arts appreciation, recognize the importance of arts practice which will increase the number of arts supporters in the community.

The Program of the Festival includes performances for MASSAR EGBARI winner of the UNESCO award 2011, SHAWARE3NA Band, KARAKEEB Band, QARAR EZALA BAND and MASHROU3 ELMARIKH.

 

The festival will also feature handcrafts exhibitions for more than 40 exhibitor presenting handcrafts from various disciplines such as copper, wire, leather, paintings, sculpture, fabric, crochet, glass etc., in addition to a Photography exhibition for past events. 

In terms of educational program, the festival will offer EXPLORE THE ARTS WORKSHOPS which will include recycling, stage Mural Painting (this mural will be painted in a workshop before the music program and will be displayed as stage background for the bands), painting with recycling material.

 

The festival is also hosting GO GREEN Workshops Program which is a series of activities divided into several stations; each station takes approximately from 20 to 30 minutes. And accordingly the students are divided into sub-groups rotating around all the stations; each group consists of 8 to 10 students. By attending this workshop the students will have experienced to learn about scientific and educational concepts in a new and sustainable way while having fun through this process. This approach is the core of what is called "Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)". 

Wasla band launching their First Album Ghanni

Finally, Wasla band are launching their first album titled Ghanni expressing meanings of freedom, hope, optimism, and connection. After more than a year of live performances Wasla band’s fans are looking forward to acquiring their favorite songs and listening to them on the go. Wasla band is unlike any other, where the members come from extremely different backgrounds and music schools. They were able to weave flamenco, funk, blues, country, Latin, jazz, hard rock and black metal to create a unique musical genre. The band members are six. Mohamed Afran is their vocalist, Ahmed Abdel Rasul plays the bass, Mostafa Daif and Mohamed Affara play the guitar, Karim Joola plays the keyboard and Ehab Lars plays the drums. Ahmed Abdel Rasul is currently in his military service, thus, Hani Yehia is replacing him.

Wasla band won Agora’s award for young emerging bands in context of its FORUM for young musicians in 2011, and proceeded in developing and improving their skills to reach professionalism. They had met during the revolution and discovered they all had common objectives. In complete harmony they were able to come up with music and lyrics that promote for cultural connection and strong social ties. With their contemporary music of multiple genres they have been able to inspire their audience for empowerment of Egyptian identity.

The album presents eight completely different songs, with different tastes and moods based on oriental rock. Want a little sneak peek into the album? The songs are titled Ana 7orr, Ana Mesh Nadman, Ghanni (the album name), Kan Yama Kan, Madinet el A7lam, Bokra A7la, and Wasat el Mo7eet. You can listen to the songs exclusively on Wasla.fm for 8 continuous days, a single song every day aired at two different times, 4 pm and 8 pm.

Agora, meaning in Greek “A Place for Gathering” is a place where people can meet and express their selves. They’ve provided an outlet for creative artists to take their chance and come out to the world in the best way. Wasla band’s album is a production of Agora and funded by the British Council and Agora.
